This partnership has generated a real buzz at First Mile. We love all our clients (we work with some amazing organisations including Caffe Nero, Sotheby’s, Ambassador Theatre Group and Innocent Drinks) and we're very happy to add somewhere as unique as Here East to our portfolio.
What is Here East?
Here East is home to a community of like-minded businesses, educators and entrepreneurs (it’s the UK’s largest incubator for start-ups). We’ll be helping them improve sustainability across the campus with our waste management and recycling expertise and we can’t wait to get started.
We love variety at First Mile, and Here East will provide that in spades, with their residents including start-ups, universities, food retailers, creative studios, offices and restaurants.
The needs of each one of them are very different, and that’s where our flexibility is a bonus.
First Mile's recycling approach
We’re not a one size fits all kind of company, so we’re creating a tailor-made service. Each Here East resident will have a regular, reliable waste collection arrangement that fits their needs, and individual measurement to help them increase recycling rates and improve their sustainability.
New First Mile clients, whether they’re an independent coffee shop or a large, shared office block, all undergo the same on-boarding process and that’s no different for the businesses at Here East.
The first step is a waste audit for every business – you’ve got to know where you’re starting from to measure success. A waste audit identifies items that can be recycled, reused, or even avoided.
Following the audit, every business will be advised on best practice waste management specific to their set up. This includes explaining the best materials to recycle separately (usually a cheaper option than mixed recycling), bin placement, employee engagement – all factors that lower waste, increase recycling rates and improve sustainability.
Once the new system in place, we don’t just collect and take away - waste tracking, bin weighing and other reports are accessible on the First Mile customer portal. Access to this data will help Here East track their progress towards their sustainability goals.
Here East will also be benefiting from our RecycleID™ solution which will enable them to track every kilogram of waste by each individual tenant, perfect for a large, multi-tenanted site.
