Can Coat Hangers be recycled?

Around 100 million hangers are thrown away every year in the UK. Sadly, most still end up in landfills where they take centuries to decompose, releasing toxic gases and polluting soil and water during this time. That's just not acceptable anymore. But can you recycle coat hangers? Yes, you can!

Many people still don't know if hangers are recyclable or where to recycle coat hangers. That's the very reason why First Mile launched its coat hanger recycling service. We live by our vision of creating a world where we can recycle everything, so we found a solution to prevent hangers from going to landfill or being incinerated.

How we recycle Coat Hangers

Our drivers collect coat hanger recycling sacks from businesses and take them to our award-winning Sacktory, where hangers are bulked and balled. Once we have enough, they are sent to our recycling partners who shred the plastic and separate the metal using magnets. The materials are then turned into new products - including brand new coat hangers.

Now you can recycle plastic hangers (and metal ones too!) easily and safely. Each coat hanger recycling sack can fit between 70 and 80 units, depending on the type of hangers and how well they're packed - as long as you can tie the sack, it's fine!
